Virtual paralegal or legal virtual assistant

A virtual paralegal does substantive legal work that an attorney reviews: drafting, discovery and records analysis. A legal virtual assistant does administrative work: intake, calendaring, billing and client updates. A small firm often starts with one assistant for the admin load and adds paralegal hours when caseload grows. See legal virtual assistant services and the full task list.

What a paralegal may not do

A paralegal is not a lawyer, in the office or remote. A virtual paralegal does not give legal advice, accept a client, set a fee, appear in court for a client or sign pleadings. The supervising attorney reviews the work and stays responsible for it under ABA Model Rule 5.3 and your state's version of that rule.

Paralegal cost compared with an in-house hire

The US median wage for paralegals and legal assistants was $30.24 an hour, or $62,890 a year, in May 2025. Payroll tax, benefits and equipment come on top of that. A remote paralegal bills only the hours you use. The cost guide shows how to compare quotes.

Questions about virtual paralegals

What does a virtual paralegal do?

A virtual paralegal does substantive legal support work from a remote location: drafting pleadings, motions and discovery for attorney review, organizing and indexing documents, summarizing medical records and depositions, preparing exhibits and trial binders, and tracking filing deadlines.

Is it legal to use a virtual paralegal?

Yes, when an attorney supervises the work. A paralegal, in house or remote, may not give legal advice, represent a client or set fees. The supervising attorney reviews and signs the work product and stays responsible for it.

Do virtual paralegals need to know my state?

For drafting and filing work, yes. Court rules, forms and deadlines differ by state and by court. Ask for a paralegal with experience in your jurisdiction and your practice area.

How do I keep client files secure with a remote paralegal?

Give each paralegal a firm account in your document and practice management systems, limit access to the matters they work on, require multi-factor login, and keep files inside your systems instead of personal email or drives.
